Care For Acne Prone Skin - My Routine & Favorite Products
My Skin - Acne Prone & Oily
I have extremely oily skin and I've been battling with acne since I was 13. I've never had the severe kind of blemishes but I always had a few breakouts here and there for over ten years. My imperfect skin used to make me feel insecure, self-conscious and frustrated. It's hard to say I love my skin when there's people have flawless skin without trying at all - my husband is one of them. He uses a random cleanser from the drug store and doesn't even moisturize. Yet, he never breaks out and doesn't even have a pore. It is important to acknowledge that your skin just needs more efforts than other people and that is FINE. I finally established a routine that works for me after years of experimenting with products. Now I usually have pretty clear skin except that time of the month. When I do break out occasionally, I know exactly what to do.
My Skincare Routine & Products
My skincare routine regarding keep acne under control consists of four steps - cleaning, face oil, moisturizer, and masks.
1 Cleanser & Exfoliator
I believe this is the most important part of my skincare routine. Since my skin produces a lot of oil during the day, I need a rather "strong" cleanser to keep my pores from congested. I choose the Kate Somerville EradiKate(R) Daily Cleanser Acne Treatment because it contains three percent sulfur to address acne and blemishes. I wash my face with the help with Foreo Luna Mini 2 - a silicone facial cleansing brush. I love how the vibration feels on my skin - it's like a three-minutes gentle massage that gives my skin a deep clean.
Sometimes, cleanser alone is not enough, especially in the summertime. I use Fresh Sugar Face Polish two to three times a week to exfoliate and detox. It leaves my skin feel soft and hydrated with a sweet scent of brown sugar.
2 Face Oils
What? More oils for oily skin? Actually, the Sunday Riley U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Acne Treatment Face Oil is the one product I can never replace in my routine. It contains Tea Tree Oil and Salicylic Acid (1.5%). It's the only thing helps me prevent and also fight existing blemishes. I usually add one or two drops into my moisture day and night.
Since I'm in my late twenties, I want to throw in some anti-aging products into my routine so I tried Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil. I use it once a week and it does help with my hyperpigmentation. The Luna oil contains retinol which is a powerful ingredient so I don't apply it every day.
For the moisturizing part, I love products that are simple and effective. I've been using the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Toner and Moisturizer for years and they never disappoint. I also really enjoy the Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado for my under-eye area.
Another essential part of caring for acne prone skin is sun protection. Sun exposure may cause more hyperpigmentation after acne healed. I apply First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Pure Mineral Sunscreen Moisturizer SPF 40 in the morning. I like it sits well under makeup and doesn't make my skin produce more oil.
4 Face Masks
Nothing feels better than a mini facial on Saturday night after a busy week. I usually apply at least one kind of face masks on Saturday after exfoliating. Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask is one of my favorite purifying masks to deep clean my pores. Glamglow Supermud Activated Charcoal Treatment is another purifying mask I love - it's more effective but it's also more harsh on the skin. I only use it when I feel my pores are extra clogged. Combined with Origins Out Of Trouble™ 10 Minute Mask, it works wonder for clearing out blemishes fast. I use it every month when I have hormonal breakouts.
After deep cleansing masks, my skin may feel dry. I love using Sk-Ii Facial Treatment Mask to restore hydration.
These are all the products I currently use to keep my skin clear. Have you found a product you want to try? Feel free to comment any questions about my skincare routine.
